Wrestling finally feels manageable to watch again, just in time for the two-night SummerSlam next weekend.
This week had just a bit of news I want to mention.
- Reports from Fightful say that Karrion Kross and Scarlett have not been offered new contracts. Kross is on the SummerSlam card, and I really hope it’s not a farewell match for him. The crowd is fully behind him and I want him in the main event scene.
- Trick Williams and Jacy Jayne both walked out of TNA Slammiversary with the TNA world titles. The event was a lot better than the Cagematch rating says. While I can’t fully invest my attention in TNA, there are some standout talents. Mustafa Ali and Leon Slater are both fantastic.
- Hulk Hogan passed away the day before SmackDown.
Now let’s get to my top moments from the weekly shows.
One Match
Karrion Kross got a match on weekly TV. He continued his feud with Sami Zayn while keeping the attention of the crowd. Sami had several moments of momentum, but Scarlett handed Kross a lead pipe that he used to seal the victory.
It was great to see Karrion Kross win a match, and against a top star like Sami. I don’t even care how he won. Keep up the good work WWE. Don’t let me down.
One Moment
AJ Styles.
The Valet. The Janitor. The Doctor.
He was everywhere this week, tormenting Dom in the most unexpected ways throughout the night. Their match is going to be great, and the build has been hilarious. WWE needs more of this.
One Promo
Ethan Page knew what had to be done. The North American Championship has been redecorated to feature his great nation of Canada.
Yes, the title already represented Canada, but it was fantastic having him debut the new title design with Canadian flags flanking him in the ring. The crowd was so angry hearing about how Canada is so much better than the US that the broadcast was hard to watch with all the censors.
Honorable Mentions
- Iyo Sky vs. Stephanie Vaquer would have been my match of the week, had it not been interrupted.
- Cody’s promo on SmackDown was actually a bit of a letdown. Right after I said he could make the top spot any given week…
- Charlotte and Alexa again—this time with Alexa covered in blood, and Charlotte looking genuinely concerned as she checked on her in the ring. They’re becoming a pattern for me.
- All the tag team matches were great. SmackDown’s tag division is particularly stacked, and I’m curious how things will shake out post-draft.
