This week was a real mixed bag of content.
WWE had three events to build toward, and I’m not sure how successfully they pulled it off. The main event scene is a mess, women are being thrown into matches without enough build and Jelly Roll is a featured star on SmackDown.
- Evolution is around the corner and Paige/Saraya headlines are making the rounds again, fueling rumors of her return to WWE. Please?
- Drew McIntyre finally has a “bored at work” shirt in the WWE Shop. I feel a definite need to add it to my wardrobe.
- After a slow start, Evolution tickets started selling quicker as of Thursday, July 10—just three days before the show. I’m so glad they’re going to have a big crowd. The women constantly show out and deserve the spotlight.
The match and moment were both easy picks. The promo? I’m still deciding my pick as I type, and I’ll probably figure it out the same moment you’re reading this.
One Match
SmackDown’s Fatal 4-Way was a fantastic preview for the Evolution women’s tag team championship match. Alexa Bliss, Kairi Sane, Sol Ruca and Roxanne Perez put on a great (albeit short) show. Sol Ruca looked great mixing it up with some of the top main roster names. Alexa’s insistence on Charlotte being at ringside gave us a great chain of attacks outside of the ring, ending with Charlotte taking down Raquel Rodriguez.
Zaria’s standout moment may have been getting slammed into the announce desk, but Sol Ruca looked perfectly at home in the ring with the others. If NXT didn’t need her as a pillar of their women’s division, a main roster call-up would be imminent.
One Moment
The Wyatt Sick6 won the tag team championship. More importantly, Dexter Lumis is holding gold in WWE. Dexter went from a weird, kind of creepy guy…to a weird, kind of creepy guy. And I love him.
Dexter is an incredibly talented wrestler. He’s been one of my constant favorites for the last few years. His time away from TV sucked, and I was constantly wondering where he was. Returning with the Wyatts was a great way to get him featured regularly, and winning his first championship with the company was my favorite moment of the week.
One Promo
Ava announcing the NXT stars participating in the Evolution battle royale wasn’t quite a promo. It was a mashup of every star they could find, leading to a big brawl. But it was still the best build that Evolution had gotten on screen.
Even if Candice LeRae (my favorite!) didn’t get to speak, it got a ton of women on screen before the event. NXT always finds a way to showcase the women on their roster. This time, they even made room for main roster stars to really build hype.
Honorable Mentions
- Blake Monroe’s little vignettes with Jordynne Grace were fun, and they’re going to hit even harder when you look back after Blake turns on her.
- Charlotte Flair somehow keeps getting cuter. Calling Alexa Bliss “blister” on screen. Not being able to contain her smiles when they come out together. Their social media makes it clear she can hardly pretend not to love this team. Charlotte almost made my top moment two weeks in a row. This team is perfect.
- Seth Rollins and his group’s promo was not a contender. It was the best the group has sounded together, but their stories are just so disconnected that I don’t care.
Did you connect with any moments I missed? Or were my picks spot on this week?
